for everyone
Cordillera life revolves around the culture of rice, and its rituals, or at least that's the way it used to be.

American architect Daniel Burnham designed Baguio City in the early 1900s for a projected population of only 25,000. The city's current population stands at 360,000 permanent residents.

Transient population, plus tourists, swells it up to close to 2-million during peak seasons.
wow ... so scary

Yes, but mountain people are mountain people. They love the peaks, the window views and the slope perspectives. They are used to landslides...he-he-he-he !

I think it is scary to live there in Baguio.
It's overpopulated................
May God Bless the inhabitants in Baguio City.

Hi Maya.
In Cordillera, this one is actually part of ritual meat, of animal sacrifice, as offering to the gods. It is called "watwat" when given as a gift to visitors. At the dying stage, it is almost an "etag," a highland dish that is highly priced and craved for.

What is the story on this ? Like, why is it called the shaman brew (other picture) and the offerings (another picture) ?
baguiowriter wrote on Sep 22, '07, edited on Dec 29, '07
The full story on these series of pictures will come out in 2008 for the Cordillera Geographic magazine.

Hi! You can always join the Philippine Information Agency or the DOT. Would you believe, I usually go alone in my photo exploration trips?

nice pic of smooth stones, it reminds me of the smooth black stones of bay-yo dap -ay in mt. province. way back 1984 when we had a forestry practicum. Sadly i was not allowed to take photos then but we were treated with tapey, kamote and etag.

nice dap-ay!
This is not a "dap-ay" in the traditional sense. It is a re-invention of the indigenous institution of the Cordilleras. This stone bench is part of an open-air chapel in Bontoc.

Mayat nga pang chaser dagitoy! waaaahehi. I like them all except the yacon wine. Apart from the red roselle wine, the BLUEBERRY is my favorite not because it is Benguet's provincial fruit, basta i like the blueberry wine, the blueberry jam, the blueberry jelly, the blueberry cake........

This kind of feast though kind of impoverishes the hosts. The cost of the meat served to the multitudes of guests could buy one a decent/better house.

Trips are confined to the mines site -- like a walk back in time.

Mines sites tell us that the capitalists are not re-investing their profits back. Up there, time looks as if it has stood still.

I am drawn toward antiquities but not to the lifestyle associated with them if they are still serviceable like this one. Looks like it is difficult to maneuver esp. up along slopes and curves of the mountain roads.

I couldn't tell beyond this period; saw this hunk of a running artifact only at Philex Mines when Jack and I visited the place in October last year.

I was glad going on a "time travel" right in the heart of this highland paradise.
