HERITAGE BUILDINGS

Baguio's built-heritage is largely ignored at the moment.

Old theater buildings which bespeak of the glorious styles of pre-war architecture and of more peaceful times, are past fading out of the scene, getting decommissioned or simply over ran by the latest developments in the malls.

Over at famous Laperal House (a.ka. White House or Haunted House along Leonard Wood Road) which is of 1923 vintage, a posh hotel will -- soon, sooner or a little later -- rise on the same spot.

Want to take a look INSIDE this haunted house? Here are the LINKS---

artnanay wrote on Nov 13, '07

Yes to all your questions, Kelly. I have taken several photos. The house with that old fireplace has been sold. A hotel perhaps will soon rice in its place, but hopefully not.

Ha-ha-ha, Ric! Para kang di taga-Baguio. Let me give you a sermon -- "Baguio is a walkable city."
So, there. This bottle-shaped fireplace could be found along Bukaneg. You could actually miss it...

The theater of course is the back of Plaza (?) Theater near People's Park. I took the angle from my dentist's clinic, upstairs, Victoria grocery.

This place I am truly familiar with, it is where our family served the citizens of Baguio. Starting from my grandfather who was the president of Baguio Driver's Association during the '60s and also where my father picked up passengers for Aurora Hill while pursuing his engineering degree. Behind the theatre was a small store/coffee shop where I used to sleep once in a while (mere memories from childhood). If I remember correctly, the yellow establishment used to be a billiard place where my father used to make bets in billiards using a single hand while competing with an opponent who uses both hands (he was good and usually won the bets with Tiongsan - stories I've heard growing up)... Azandas was the word spoken in that street during those days... People come and go in this street and last I visited, I couldn't even see any old timers anymore... Everyone who walked this street knew everyone during those days, from parents to children. Lately, things has dramatically changed. There are so many people in Baguio that you hardly can bump in to someone you know... I miss the Old Baguio...

There's another old house with Baguio stone being demolished along Kisad Road. Sayang, sayang, sayang. I almost want to walk over and ask them to give the rocks to me!

"Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got til it's gone.
They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot!"
-- Joni Mitchell

Seems like she's singing about Baguio.

Wow, lovely memories! I love the details, from the color yellow to making bets in billiards with one hand.

Hi Padma, every time I'd see Baguio Stones falling off from decaying buildings, I almost always want to bring them home, if not steal them. Those pink limestones have been depleted.

Jessie: That yellow building is now the 2nd Tiongsan Branch, there are 4 or 5 branches of them now. Every street has its own story. You better blog your own memoirs of Baguio, if I may say so.

Mark: Tell that to the wind and it will hear yah! I'm not kidding. The Universe has ears.

Wow! What a profound and touching statement from a theater person, Ms. Libay. Nostalgia always has magic in it. Thanks. Marami akong kakampi.

Oh, is that so? Old Mido is owned by the family of Steve Hamada's wife. Jack C., who is a cousin of them, will try to get in touch with them.

Yes, it is located in that area. Actually, this is the only one that looks a bit maintained. The rest are dilapidated.

There are seven old movie theaters in Baguio -- six of them have been decommissioned -- overran by the new mall theaters.

the house had a recent paintjob; i guess because it's owner Lucio Tan has 'millions to spare' Surprisingly the house is well maintained.

I remember this house. The Santa Marias (Rina) used to lived in this house. It is near the Teacher's Camp.

isn't this the old theatre building ka-hilera ng u-need which has been transformed into another of baguio's ukay-ukay havens?
baguiowriter wrote on Nov 22, '07
Yes, Dr. K. It is the Plaza Theater near U-Need Grocery. It has a very elegant foyer, staircase and balcony right at the entrance, just like a small Cultural Center.

I don't remember ever seeing this house in Engineer's Hill. Looks more like one of the houses in Cabinet Hill.

what a shame! i dont know how are laws work back home, but here in the UK they have what they call listed buildings that no matter what they wont be "demolished"as they have already been part of history.this buildings will be protected and some restored if possible.

I'm afraid the cluster of vintage government cottages will soon follow suit. At least two new big buildings (in modern styles) are being built right beside the old cottages near the DOLE compound.

We'll try to get pix of the ongoing constructions there when we get back to Baguio from out of town work.
